UNITED AUCTIONS STIRLING LAMBS

Averages:

89 ram lambs, £1573.71 (+£655.95 for nine fewer sold)

Bare was undoubtedly beautiful amongst the ram lambs when a ‘summer jacketed’ entry from Midlock attracted the lead price at £26,000.

The lamb from father Allan, son Allan and his son, Ben Wight, from Midlock, Crawford, is a son of the 2020 £60,000 Loughash bought at Lanark, in partnership with Elmscleugh and Nunnerie, and out of a ewe by the £100,000 shared Elmscleugh lamb acquired at Dalmally.

The buyers were Malcolm Coubrough and son, also Malcolm, Hartside, Lamington; and Queensberry Farming, Mitchellslacks, Thornhill, Dumfries-shire, managed by Richard Colley.

His twin brother made £6500 and was sold in a three-way split, having been purchased by Davie and Jock Jackson, Pole, Lochgoilhead, with the remaining two-thirds bought by Andrew Campbell, buying for his unit at Fort William and the family business at Lochgoilhead.

Unsurprisingly, Midlock secured the lead flock average of £11,033 for three lambs.

John Murray’s Crossflatt flock, from Muirkirk, was again in the money selling six lambs at £3838, backed up by top prices of £14,000 and £5000.

Dearest here was the pen leader, a son of the 30,000gns McCurdy lamb bought at Ballymena in 2020, bred from a ewe by a £90,000 Blackhouse lamb. He sold jointly to Ewen Macmillan, Lurg, Fintry, and Richard Nixon, Marbrack, Carsphairn, Dalmellington.

Iain McLarty, Little Port, St Fillans, bought the £5000 Crossflatt lamb, which was by a home-bred son of £150,000 Auldhouseburn, out of a ewe by an £18,000 Gass.

The same 30,000gns McCurdy lamb was behind a £7000 lamb from Archie and John MacGregor, Allanfauld, Kilsyth, which sold to the breeder of the sire, James McCurdy, Broughshane, Northern Ireland. The dam of this one is by a £25,000 Crossflatt.

Lambs from Willie Dunlop and sons, Quintin and William, Elmscleugh, Dunbar, as always prove popular and they did so again, with sales at £5800 and £2500 for sons of the £38,000 Allanfauld lamb acquired at Lanark in 2020. Best was the pen’s No 1, bred from a ewe by a £160,000 Dalchirla and purchased by Colin Little, East Bracklinn, and Adam Wood, Wester Gartchonzie, both Callander.

Heading down to the South-west with Keith Brooke, Carscreugh, Glenluce, Stranraer, at £5200 was the pen leader from Hugh and Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn, Muirkirk. His pedigree features the 2020 £70,000 Harestone lamb, onto a ewe by a £75,000 Dalchirla.

Another bred from a £75,000 Dalchirla-sired ewe but sired by a £15,000 High Staward lamb, then made £3200, selling to Ozzie Wardrop, Outerwards, Brisbane Glen Estates.

Dumfries-shire breeder, Richard Carruthers, Merkland, Thornhill, enjoyed a similar trade with lambs at £5000 and £4500 for sons of the 2020 £34,000 Crossflatt Ayr Raid. The No 3, bred from a ewe that is a full sister to the £16,000 Merkland, made £5000 selling to Willie Welsh, Burnfoot, Sanquhar, and his father, Billy, who farms at Beoch, Loch Doon, Dalmellington.

Merkland’s No 2, bred from a ewe with the same breeding, made £4500 to Mary McCall Smith, Connachan, Crieff, and neighbouring breeder, Auchnafree Estate, managed by Andy Scott.

Ayr Raid was also the sire of Hugh and Madge Rorison’s Clonrae lamb, from Thornhill, Dumfries-shire that made £4200. The lamb, brought out by shepherd Michael Robertson and bred from an Auldhouseburn-bred ewe, sold to Little Port.

Drew Coulter, who keeps a select number of ewes from his base at Glenrath Cottage, Peebles, also came up with the goods selling a lamb for £4500 to Tom Hutchinson, Chapel Farm, Moffat, Dumfries-shire.
