Averages improved on the year and for more sold in the south-type shearling rings at United Auctions’ massive one-day sale of Blackface rams at Stirling.
It was a day to remember for Andrew Kay and sons, Andrew and Robert, Gass, Straiton, too when they sold their No 1 shearling for £25,000. He is by a £8000 Glenrath tup bought two years ago and out of a dam by a £80,000 Auldhouseburn. Willie Dunlop and sons, Quintin and William, Elmscleugh, Innerwick, Dunbar, teamed up with Richard Colley of Queensberry Farming, Mitchellslacks, Thornhill, to buy this ram.
The Wights of Midlock, Crawford, Biggar, sold their best for £18,000 to next door neighbour father and daughter duo, Jim and Jen Craig of Normangill, Crawford. Their purchase is son of a £24,000 Connachan and bred from a £6000 Nunnerie sired-dam.
The No 1 in the same pen achieved £7500 when the hammer fell to Joe Dickson, Dunlogan, Dripers. He got for his money a shearling backed by home-bred genetics being sired by the Buck which again goes back to a £24,000 Connachan, and out of a ewe by a son of a £100,000 Elmscleugh.
Another from the same home made £6500. He is by the £200,000 Dalchirla and bred from a £26,000 Dyke sired-ewe. He now travels to Newton Stewart with David Ferguson for his Drannandow and Markdhu flocks based at Newton Stewart and New Luce, respectively.
Jimmy and Donald MacGregor of the Dyke, Milton of Campsie, sold their best for £10,000 to WS Robson, Yatesfield, Otterburn, Newcastle upon Tyne. He is the result of a £45,000 Nunnerie tup onto a ewe by the home-bred tup, Poldark, which has previously bred sons to £42,000.
Stuart McDougall, Kelty, was another in the money, achieving a personal best of £7500 with his first shearling. Backed by home-bred genetics, he is by a £3500 ram that goes back to a £3500 Kirkstead, while the dam is a daughter of a £1800 Millhouse tup. Final bidder here was Alan McClymont buying for his Dryhope flock, Yarrow.
After their successful day selling, Midlock, went to £7000 for an Arnicle shearling from Iain and David McArthur, Glenbarr, Tarbert. Bred from a ewe by a home-bred son of a £16,000 Merkland, he is sired by the 9000gns Veronica Fullerton ram.
Ian Hunter, Dalchirla, Muthill, Crieff, also had a good day with sales at £7000, £6500 and £6000.
His dearest was a son of his £200,000 Dalchirla lamb sold in 2020, of which a share was retained, whilst the dam goes back to a £22,000 Lurg tup. He sold in a three-way split to DJ and A O’Mullan, Glenbuck and K O’Mullan, Gortahar and H Crawford, Glenhead, Glenview.
Next best at £6500 was a shearling by a £24,000 Connachan bred from a £24,000 Elmscleugh sired-dam. Andy Scott, buying for Auchnafree Estate, Amulree, Perthshire was the final bidder.
Glenlivet-based breeders, Stephen Duncan and son, Stephen, Achdregnie, Ballindalloch, went to £6000 for pen leader from the Dalchirla pen. He is a son of a £45,000 Nunnerie tup and bred from a ewe by a £24,000 Connachan.
Also achieving £6500 was a Lynemore shearling from Archie McKinnon, farm manager at Cadogan Estates, Amulree, Dunkeld. Sired by a £14,000 Allanfauld and out of a £2800 Crosswoodburn sired-dam, he sold to the Renwicks, Blackhouse, Yarrow; and the Campbells of Glenrath, Kirkton Manor, Peebles.
Selling at £5800 was the best from Angus Kennedy and son Angus, Mitchellhill, Biggar, purchased by Scott Lambie, Ashcraig, Selkirk. He is from the first crop of shearlings by a £42,000 Dyke and out of a home-bred dam by a £1400 Lurg.
Inverness breeder, A MacDonald, Ess and Dalbuiack, Carrbridge, went to £5500 for the No1 in the Craigdarroch pen from Willie and Billy Graham, Craigdarroch, Sanquhar. Bred from a £20,000 Allanfauld-sired dam he is out of a ewe by a £38,000 Dyke.
Elmscleugh sold a son of a £26,000 Dalchirla, out of a £45,000 Midlock sired-dam to John and Iain Finlay, Blackcraig, Corsock, Castle Douglas; and Jimmy Wallace, Fingland, Dalry, Castle Douglas.
The Campbells of Easter Happrew, Kirkton Manor, Peebles, went to £4500 for the second in the Elmscleugh pen. This one was the result of the sire, a £60,000 Loughash tup onto a ewe by a home-bred son of a £160,000 Dalchirla.
