The crowds gathered at Hexham Auction Mart on Monday 11th October 2021 for the annual Blackface sheep tup sale. Buyers were in attendance from Aberdeen and all the way down to Devon which saw the alleyways and ringside busy all day and a strong day’s trading for both breeders and commercial stock ensued. Chris Armstrong, auctioneer, commented that it was the best show of sheep he had seen for many years and said “A super sale once again at Hexham for the noted breeders of the Hexham type after a relatively lack lustre sale in 2020 due to the pandemic. Buyers from Inverness to Devon in attendance with a great clearance of both breeders and commercial types realising a lift of £215 to £1063 for 262 rams sold.”
It was a successful day for Selby Robson of Yatesfield, Otterburn, who secured the 1st prize shearling in the pre-sale show, judged by Willie Woodman and shepherd Billy Nicholson of Great Chesters, Haltwhistle. Selby Robson went on to make the day’s top price of £11,000 when selling to Andrew and Caroline Hunter for their respective flocks of The Steel, Bellingham and Carrick, Otterburn. This stylish tup was by a £6,500 Westhills out of ewe by £3,200 Toft House.
Yatesfield also sold a tup priced at £3,500 to David Hope, Albierigg, Canonbie; he was also by the £6,500 Westhills with a £1,300 Larg of Creetown mother.
Two tups went under the hammer at £6,000. Firstly, the Robson family of Town Shields, Haydon Bridge, sold a son of the £7,500 Frank Hall out a ewe by £5,900 Town Shields. He also goes out to work for the Hunters of Carrick and The Steel.
The second tup at the £6,000 mark came from John and Jonjo Pattinson, Hotbank, Bardon Mill, with their pen leader selling to Dennis and Stuart Charlton, Whiteside, Haltwhistle. He is sired by a homebred son of the £18,000 Dudlees out of a £13,000 Penpeugh ewe.
The Pattinson’s second tup in the ring made £4,000 selling to the Gibson family of Thornton Tower, Newbrough. This one was a direct son the £18,000 Dudlees with his dam by £12,500 Toft House.
Father and son team of Philip and Dan Walton, Wanwood Hill, Alston, sold to a top of £5,500 when selling to first time Hexham buyer of Clune and Corrybrough Estates, Inverness, managed by Richard Thompson. This strong boy is by the notorious Homebred stock tup named Ov and out of a ewe by £9,000 Toft House sire.
Stu Robson of Toft House, Otterburn, was selling his first crop of sons off the £7,500 Stell Green with the best making £5,000 when selling to Dennis Yeats, Close A Burn, Haltwhistle. He was out of a £1,600 Yatesfield mother.
Also from Toft House, was a £3,000 sale which went in a two-way split to Nick Walton, Cowdenburn, Birtley, and the Robson’s of Town Shields. He had a £16,000 Wanwood Hill mother and in turn was by a homebred son of Penpeugh.
Father and daughter team of Geoff and Fiona Paxton, Greenleighton, Longwitton, had yet another successful day when their best sold for £4,500. He is sired by a £2,000 Westhills out of a ewe by £2,600 Wanwood Hill and goes out to work on the Otterburn ranges at Toft House.
Before that, Greenleighton’s pen leader sold for £3,000. This son of an £1,800 Wanwood Hill went up the Irthing Valley when knocked down to The Lamperts, Gilsland. His mother was by a £7,500 Burncastle.
Andrew and Caroline Hunter, The Steel recouped some of their outlay when their pen leader sold for £3,500 to Messrs Ridley of Shitlington Hall, Wark, with Stu Robson of Toft House getting a half share, buying back some of his own breeding as he was by the £11,000 Toft House.
Steven McKay, Dudlees, Otterburn, continues to make his mark on both sides of the border when he received £3,200 for a son of £3,200 Allanfauld, out of ewe by £3,200 Williamhope. He makes the journey to the North York Moors to Shepherd’s Croft for Peter Turnbull.
At £3,000 Dudlees also sold a son of £7,500 Williamhope to fellow Otterburn farmer, Jake Elder of Pottsdurtrees. His mother was by a Monkridge Hill loan.
