FEMALE SALE 2024
A strong demand ensured an 83% clearance at the Blackface Sheep Breeders’ Association’s show and sale of females at Lanark Mart on Saturday, 23rd February, 2024, where 31 sold to average £1681.35.
Judging the pre-sale show was John MacPherson, Balliemeanoch, who selected a gimmer from John Murray, Crossflatt, Muirkirk, as best overall. A daughter of McCoy and out of a ewe by Spectre, she went onto top the sale, selling at 5800gns to Robert and Ian Shaw, Acharonich, Ardfern. She had stood second to the champion at Muirkirk show last year and sold due with a single lamb to the home-bred tup, Titan.
Second top, at 5000gns, was a gimmer from Ewen Macmillan, Lurg, Fintry, which sold to John Harkin, Loughash. Sired by Highlander and out of a ewe by £3200 Midlock, this one is scanned a single to £23,000 Dalchirla.
Lurg also sold a gimmer at 2400gns to Andy Woodburn, Netherwood, Muirkirk. This Highlander daughter sold due a single to £23,000 Dalchirla. Meanwhile, a one-crop ewe from Lurg sold at 2000gns to Rhoda Munro, Isle of Mull. That one is by £18,000 Elmscleugh and due with twins to £23,000 Dalchirla.
Best for Thomas Muirhead’s Orchilmore consignment from Blair Atholl, was a 3400gns bid for a one-crop ewe by £6000 Auldhouseburn, out of a daughter of £160,000 Elmscleugh. Due with a single lamb to £32,000 Auldhouseburn, she sold to JJ McAllister, Cushendun, Ballymena.
Not far behind, the Wight family, Midlock, Crawford, sold a gimmer from their Grains consignment at 3200gns, to Robert Mackay, Oban. Sired by £30,000 Midlock and out of a ewe by Hawkeye, she is due with triplets to £30,000 Crossflatt.
From their Midlock consignment, the Wights sold another gimmer by £30,000 Midlock, out of a ewe by a son of £24,000 Connachan, at 2800gns, to Matthew Hamilton Gregor MacPherson, Woolfords, Cobbinshaw. She is scanned twins to Emperor, a son of £30,000 Crossflatt. From the same pen, a gimmer made 2100gns, by £40,000 Dyke, due with twins to £30,000 Nunnerie. That one sold to Jimmy and Donald MacGregor, Dyke, Milton of Campsie.
Next best was one at 2600gns from David Morrison, Dalwyne, Barr, Girvan. A two-crop ewe, sired by £38,000 Crossflatt and out of a daughter of £22,000 Dalchirla, she sold to D Roberts, Heol Las, Penderyn. That one is due with twins to £15,000 Auldhouseburn. Another two-crop ewe from Dalwyne made 2000gns, to Messrs Ridley. A daughter of £4500 Loughash, she is carrying twins to £15,000 Auldhouseburn.
A three-crop ewe from Archie and John MacGregor, Allanfauld, Kilsyth, sold at 2100gns to the Hamiltons’ Crosswoodhill flock, at West Calder. She is by £5500 Elmscleugh, out of a ewe by £32,000 Midlock and sold carrying triplets to £12,000 Dyke.
At 2000gns, a gimmer from Allanfauld sold to the Guilds at Ashmark, New Cumnock. A daughter of Tarmac, out of a ewe by £12,000 Dyke, she is due with twins to £15,000 Glenrath.
Topping the trade for the Renwicks’ Williamhope pen, from Clovenfords, was a gimmer by a home-bred son of £60,000 Glenrath, which sold at 2100gns. Carrying a single to a home-bred son of £78,000 Dalchirla, she went to JA Robertson, Mid Linthills, Lochwinnoch.
Making 2000gns was a two-crop ewe from the Aberuchill flock at Comrie, Perth. Sired by £22,000 Auldhouseburn, she went carrying twins to £18,000 Dalchirla, to Ewan Fraser, Balgowan, Laggan.
Final 2000gns seller was a two-crop ewe from Charlie and Cathal Harkin’s The Rock flock. Sired by £4800 Stroanbrack, she is due with twins to £15,000 Elmscleugh and sold to Donal Breslin, Cronkeerin, Ardara.
